Tanzania
Tanzania is a country in East Africa bordered by Kenya and Uganda on the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique on the south. To the east it borders the Indian Ocean. Formerly known as German East Africa and then Tanganyika, after it was transferred to the United Kingdom as a mandate by the League of Nations in 1920, Tanganyika united with Zanzibar in 1964, forming the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which later the same year was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. Dodoma is the official capital and seat of Tanzania's Union Parliament. Dar es Salaam, the country's largest city, remains home to government ministries and major institutions, including diplomatic missions. Swahili is the official language, but English is fairly commonly spoken.
