Bird the World

Belize

The small country of Belize, somewhat larger than Wales, is a mélange of inland mountains covered with tropical rainforest, an agricultural belt in the foothills, and a coastal wetland lined with lovely beaches and small offshore islets. The waters off Belize are internationally famous, attracting divers, snorklers, and fishermen. Only 174 miles north to south, and 80 miles across, it is an easy country to see well in a short time. For such a small country it has an extraordinary bird list of over six-hundred species. It also has a well-developed eco-tourist industry. English is the language spoken in most of Belize but there are Spanish speakers along the border with Mexico.

Number of species recorded to date in Belize: 618

Number of endemics: 0
