Bird the World

El Salvador

El Salvador, slightly larger than Wales but smaller than Belize, is one of the most densely populated countries in Central America. The great degree of habitat destruction is no doubt related to population pressure. The country has been little explored by modern birders but, if your path leads you there, you will find a number of excellent birding areas that are easily accessible. Pine and pine-oak forests are found in the cordillera, there are cloud forest patches on some of the volcanoes, and lower down on the Pacific side there are some remnants of dry tropical forest.

Number of species recorded to date in El Salvador: 582

Number of endemics: 0
