Bird the World

Nicaragua

Nicaragua is slightly larger that the state of Pennsylvania and less than half the size of the United Kingdom. Most of its people and most of its economic activity is centered around the two large lakes of Managua and Nicaragua in the western highlands. These highlands, however, are high only when compared to the rest of the country. Nicaragua lacks the true mountains of many other Central American countries. As a result it is not a prime destination for birders. That said, Nicaragua has some areas of excellent lowland forest, and, being rarely birded, will no doubt see new birds added to its national list as people begin to explore what it has to offer.

Number of species recorded to date in Nicaragua: 698

Number of endemics: 1
