Panama

Panama is slightly smaller than the state of South Carolina, about one-third the size of the UK. The country is a favorite with birders. The habitats range from fine tropical rain forests to high altitude paramo, coastal mangroves on the Caribbean side, some drier areas with savanna vegetation on the Pacific slope, and various levels of forest on the upper slopes of the mountain chain. As the link between South America and the Central American countries, Panama also is the northernmost location of many species.

Number of species recorded to date in Panama: 971

Number of endemics: 16
