Angola

Angola is a large, developing country in southern Africa bordering Namibia to the south, Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, and Zambia to the east, and with a west coast along the Atlantic Ocean. Angola was engulfed in a civil war for 27 years, which only ended in 2002. There are growing signs of economic recovery, but major problems remain with virtually every element of infrastructure and government service throughout the country, including communications and basic social services. The capital and largest city is Luanda, and Portuguese is the official language.

Number of species recorded to date in Angola: 979

Number of endemics: 14
