Visitors to Mexico find a land of great contrasts, elegant colonial buildings are set off by emphatically modern buildings, while in scattered areas there are monumental reminders of Mexico's great indigenous past. The landscape itself stretches from northwestern deserts, through towering mountains, to lush rainforest areas, large expanses of agricultural land, all this bounded by the enormously long coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific sides.These contrasts extend to Mexican society, where the gap between the fabulously rich and the poor who live in some remote rural areas, especially in the far south, is startling. The contrast is cultural also. Mexico is home to outstanding exponents of the world culture that has spread from Europe, whether it be in the fine arts, in dance, or in classical music, but this European culture is enriched by a host of indigenous art forms that are indebted more or less to popular culture and indigenous traditions. This, the most populous Spanish speaking country in the world, is a treasure house. Fortunately for birders the richness also to its birdlife, ninety endemics and almost 1,100 species.
