Canada, the world's second largest country by total area, occupies most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest. It is a federation comprising of ten provinces and three territories, which can be grouped into regions, Western, Central and Atlantic. Three territories, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, make up Northern Canada. It is a bilingual and multicultural country, with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. It has a total population of 31,612,897 (2006) and the largest city is Toronto. Ottawa is the capital.
