Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
In the most south eastern corner of the state near Moss Point south of US 10, this refuge encompasses an area along the Escatawpa River and ranges from frequently flooded bottomland hardwood forest along the river to pine savannas. Such a wide diversity of habitat provides for excellent birding, particularly during spring migration.
Hillside National Wildlife Refuge.
16 miles north of Yazoo City in West central Mississippi, this refuge can be reached from US interstate rte 55, off at exit 146 and driving west on Rte 14, which passes through the reserve. The reserve is an oasis of wildlife habitat surrounded by agriculture, and is a hotspot for waterfowl, with ducks and waders numbering well over 100,000 in winter. In summer migrants pass through and more than 200 species have been recorded here.
Noxubee Wildlife Refuge.
A few miles south of Starkville (which is on US 82) in eastern Mississippi, this is one place you can be guaranteed to see the endangered Red–cockaded Woodpecker. The Woodpecker Trail is a 20-30 minute walk and all the species of woodpeckers indigenous to the Southeast can be found along it. At the beginning of the trail, take the right fork. The trail winds through a mature stand of loblolly pine, which houses an active colony of red-cockaded woodpeckers. Over 250 species have been recorded here.
Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
10 miles southwest of Yazoo City, this refuge has one of the largest bottomland forests in the lower Mississippi River alluvial floodplain. As with the Hillside Refuge to the north, wintering wildfowl numbers are very high, but with all the woodland, this refuge also provides habitat for 200 species of neotropical migratory songbirds.
Strawberry Plains Audubon Center.
In the northern part of the state at Holly Springs,which is off US Rte 78. Holly Springs Audubon Center has 2,500 acres of open fields, seasonal creeks, and wooded hills. The center attracts both birds and birdwatchers. Their annual Hummingbird Festival in September is well worth visiting if you are in the area.
